New Jersey is National Leader in Character Education
New Jersey is one of only five states to receive a four year $2 million federal grant under the Partnerships in Character Education grant program, Title V, Part D of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2002. With these funds, New Jersey established the New Jersey Center for Character Education (NJCCE) in 2003. The center, under the directorship of Dr. Philip Brown, is located in the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology at Rutgers University's Center for Applied Psychology. The NJCCE helps schools and school districts develop and implement character education programs. The NJCCE has sponsored several conferences held throughout the state that showcased the work of ten demonstration sites as well as other character education programming existing throughout the state and nation. Currently, four of the ten demonstration sites are working with the SDM/PS Program. They include Jersey City, Highland Park, Cape May Special Services, and Westwood school districts.
